Aromachology: Understand Your Audience to Serve them Best

As an AromaTech® client, you already know much about the science of aromatherapy, which focuses on using essential oils to increase the ambiance in your business and increase sales. The term aromachology, however, may still be relatively new to you. In 1982 it appeared for the first time. Annette Green, president of the Fragrance Foundation, suggested it to define the science pertaining to the use of essential oils for psychological benefits. Since then, experts throughout the world have adopted the word for their research in the field of wellbeing and emotions caused by fragrances and perfumes.

While the term aromachology is still new, the science isn't. Archeological findings going back as far as 4000 years ago indicate the usage of aromatic and fragrant plants for their effects on the spirit. However, historians speculate that certain herbs and flowers may have been used much earlier by prehistoric healers, even as long ago as the Pleistocene geological epoch (2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago) when the species homo habilis emerged. Consider, however, zoopharmacognosy. This is the behavior that certain animals seem to medicate themselves by ingesting or topically applying specific plants. For any ailment nature can cause, it can also supply the cure. This is a comforting notion.

One of the most impressive applications of essential oils as aromachology is the treatment of patients suffering amnesia. Scents enter our system primarily through the nose and secondarily through the mouth (via the pharynx). From there, they travel directly to the olfactory receptor neurons. These connect to parts of our brain strongly implicated in emotion and memory: the amygdala and hippocampus. When amnesia patients inhale scents, which pertain to their childhood, it makes it easier for them to link back to elements of their past.

Another application which holds great promise is a discovery made in 2002 by Shiseido, a Japanese manufacturer of cosmetics. This company found out that four specific scents are claimed to have a stimulating effect on burning fat: grapefruit, fennel, tarragon and pepper. Shiseido combined the four and marketed the aromachologic perfume SLM (Spicy Lemon Mixture). Their scientific tests are not yet conclusive enough but do seem to point in the right direction. In the spring of 2013, Shiseido introduced a new product with advanced aromachologic technology to support the effects of SLM. Perhaps there is hope after all for the growing number of overweight women and men in the USA.

Even if you do not have a mental disorder, the benefit of diffusing essential oils in a hospital room may be astonishing. The pleasant scent will simply make a patient happier, contributing to a quicker recovery.

For maximum effect, aromachologists often combine essential oils with other disciplines. A physiotherapist may apply a massage, using oils which are suitable for topical appliance so that the patient is ultimately relaxed during the therapy.
